There are two different types of vinyl fences: “Vinyl” and “cellular vinyl”. Both are made from plastic and therefore don’t incur damage from moisture or insects. Both materials are available in a wide array of fence styles. The primary difference between the two types is that cellular vinyl is a composite in which the plastic has been blended with other materials, such as wood fibers or other additives, to create a cellular structure which is used to fabricate custom fencing and other outdoor products.

Vinyl Fences

Vinyl fences has a hollow core, which makes the material lightweight, and is available in most fence and gate styles. It comes in many colors, from white to dark, as well as simulated wood textures. Its finish can be glossy or matte. Vinyl fences cost less than cellular vinyl fences, however, the price increases considerably when a darker color or matte finish is selected. A major advantage of this type of material is its longevity and low maintenance requirements. Occasional power washing will keep this material looking like new.

Cellular Vinyl Fences

Cellular Vinyl is the generic term for brand names such as Azek, Kleer, and Versatex. It is a dense, solid material which can be cut and fabricated into custom fence styles, gates, pergolas and arbors. Once installed, cellular vinyl is painted for a beautiful aesthetic that looks and feels very much like wood. Like its hollow cousin, cellular vinyl is virtually maintenance free and doesn’t decay over time. All that is required to keep it looking new is an occasional power wash. Cost of cellular vinyl is considerably higher than Vinyl and even wood fences.

Fence styles available in Cellular Vinyl and Vinyl include:

  • Picket fence
  • Privacy fence such as tongue and groove
  • Shadowbox fence
  • Horizontal board fence
  • Post and rail fence

In summary, while Vinyl is a broad term referring to the type of plastic used, cellular vinyl is a specific form of Vinyl that incorporates a cellular or foam-like core structure. Both cellular vinyl and the less costly Vinyl are popular choices for fencing due to their durability, resistance to environmental factors, and low maintenance requirements. The choice between the two depends on factors such as texture preferences, aesthetic requirements of the project and budget.
